I am grateful for the wonderful care I have received at TARA. I want to tell you a little story. Twenty years ago I was suffering from restricted movement ability and some serious limits in my ability to function. After many doctors telling me they didn't know what was wrong with me and after many exams, including a spinal tap, I happened upon Dr. Sylvia Ross. I recall as I was explaining my woes to her, she started smiling. "I know exactly what's wrong with you" And she did. Within a week I was improving. She has been treating me ever since. She is friendly, caring, thorough, and understanding. The staff has always been friendly and helpful with me. Although I don't write reviews, I felt compelled to present a counterpoint to the repetitive review elsewhere on this page.

Dr. Chmelewski listens and seems to sincerely put his knowledge to work for you. I have only seen him twice, and during those visits, I felt he had a passion for making me and his patients feel better. But BEWARE of certain office practice policies. I missed my third appointment because I mistakenly got the time wrong. I called within 10-20 minutes stating I had made a mistake. I was told rather rudely that I would be charged $50 for missing the appointment. I explained, but the appointment clerk had no compassion for me as a patient. Further, she would not excuse a first time missed appointment. I had to reschedule and had to wait a month and a half to get back in. I received the bill 3 days later. The letter that accompanied the bill stated that a second missed appointment result in a $75 charge and the possibility of being terminated as a patient. I DO understand that a missed appointment costs the practice money. I missed the appointment in part due to the VERY REASON I was seeing Dr. Chmelewski, which is fibromyalgia, which can significantly effect the ability to manage everyday tasks and causes trouble being able to remember and focus and effectively manage deadlines and scheduled expectations. Its called "fibro fog". I explained that I DID call promptly to explain that I confused the appointment time and the likely reason. Since then cancelled the upcoming appointment. I realize that a doctor's practice is a commercial business, but at the same time a level of compassion, understanding and sense of a forgiving customer service should be in order. Although I will find another doctor in a different practice without such policy. They may receive $50 from me, but they have lost my future business, which would be much more than the missed appointment fee. I paid the bill and marched as a weary soldier all the way to the mailbox.

I am shocked to read the previous reviews because I have been with Dr. Chmelewski and Triangle Arthritis for 18 years, and they are the kindest, most caring practice! I would never have stayed as long if they were not. Dr. C never rushes and is one of the most caring doctors I know. The nurses are professional, helpful, and usually call me within the hour when I have a question or concern. The office staff is equally as caring and friendly and always make sure to call me before appts. to confirm. So I have no clue how my experience can be so different than the people with the negative reviews, but it has been. I am grateful to be a patient of such a caring practice!

I found this group to be extremely unprofessional. I had an outstanding appointment for 4 months and when I arrived they told me in their front office- loudly- we cannot see you because you have had a birthday and are now on Medicare and we do not treat medicare insurance. I stated tht they could have called me- they said it wasn't their fault and that someone should have called them. I said that they had all my paper work and my birthdate- The young, rude girl said well a lot of people that turn 65 ar still working and have their insurance. ( I also have BLue Cross) The girl then proceeded to say" Well, there are not any Arthritis clinics in Raleigh that treat people on medicare now." ---privacy laws?????? this was in hte waiting room with 5 other people sitting there.

Walter Chmelewski, should be ashamed of himself! The entire staff at Triangle Arthritis & Rheumatology Associates are very unprofessional. Nursing staff that handles people are VERY rude and condescending! I had a nurse call me and state Dr. wanted me to start some new medication. I was fine with that but I had some questions I wanted to ask the doctor. I asked if he could call me back so I could talk to him about why he wanted me to start the medicine. I wanted to know the side effects and the actual benefits and reasons why he was prescribing it to me. The nurse said, " What do you want to know, I'll tell you" So I asked the questions and she was extremely vague(as I would expect from a nurse NOT being a doctor). I asked her if she could just have the doctor call me so I could be more comfortable. She clearly takes it personal and got hostile! She stated, "No, he doesn't call patients back. He is too busy seeing patients and doesn't have time to stop to get on the phone, that is what I am hired to do. I tell the patients what the doctor wants. What more do you want?" I told her it wasn't personal towards her I just wanted to talk to the doctor about my treatment. I asked her if that was a problem. She snapped at me and said, "If you don't like how the doctor does things you are free to go somewhere else. The doctor will not change how he does things for you". At that point I was in tears. I had just come to terms of a life threatening illness diagnosis and to have this disgusting, vile person talk to me in such a way was too much to bare. My husband took the phone and sternly told the nurse to have the doctor call me back that our insurance company pays him not her to make such decisions regarding my care. The nurse hung up on him. Less than a week later I received a letter in the mail from this practice stating they were letting me go as a patient and that I needed to find another doctor to care for me. I am at loss for words. How the heck does this man sleep at night? As I stated to "dig" around I found that this seems to be common practice at this office. As soon as someone questions or raises any concern they are "let go". I have heard they were racist, which I was witness to my first and last visit there towards a patient that was waiting. I don't know how this kind of conduct is allowed. They should be ashamed of themselves!
